Backpacking

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

When you read and see Backpacking, the first thought which comes instantly into your mind is hiking, mountains and a lot of energy for walking continuously. Well, it is a combination of camping and hiking in a single trip. The people who frequently opt for this type of sport are referred to as backpackers. They usually hike into the mountains or the back country valleys to spend a few nights and they carry with them specific required supplies and equipment. These tools are to satisfy their eating and sleeping needs.

One point to be kept in mind is that a backpacking camp is simple from the ordinary camps. A backpacker has to pack all of his tools into a backpack and carry it with him. He also needs to carry with him water, food and shelter in a compact form. In all, a backpacking trip can be for at least one overnight stay in the wild environment and close to Mother Nature. But, a lot of backpacking trips can last for a weekend or even a month.

There are also professional backpacking trips. For some people, this type of sport is an integral part of their job and is necessary. For instance, the US military has a framed backpacking sport, where the soldiers receive guidance on the basic backpacking training to the more advanced skill level of backpacking. These soldiers share a lot of common attributes with amateur backpackers. Like, they use the land navigation skills, are self contained and actively strive to minimize their environmental footprint.

But, still there are a few differences, as the soldiers have to carry weapons and such ammunition other than the amateur ones.

Rock climbing can be easily divided into two main categories comprising aid climbing and free climbing.

Aid Climbing: This form of rock climbing generally involves the use of various other devices that help in the event. These devices are basically used to support the climber in mounting climbing. These devices are mostly used on those rocks that lack natural features facilitating rock climbing. These devices are also used for supporting a part or the full weight of the climber.

Free Climbing: This is the most dangerous form of rock climbing as the climber uses only his physical strength for climbing upward a rock. No kind of device is used for supporting the climber. Some of the climbers also use a rope which is important to protect in case if the climber falls. But, actual free climbing is mainly done without the use of any artificial device.

Some of the other kinds of rock climbing are:

Traditional climbing: In this form of rock climbing the leader mostly uses a removable gear which is used to protect the climbers from falling. The leader is the main person in this kind of climbing as he keeps on placing protective devices as he climbs up the rock. Once the leader climbs to the top of the rock the same route is followed by the other people to climb the rock.

Top Roping: This form of rock climbing generally involves the suspension of a rope from the top of the rock. The climber simply ties himself to one end of the rope and is belayed by the belayer who manages to get the other end of the rope.

It is very important to select the right category. Usually the course may run for over 2 days or so.

Many rock climbing aspects and techniques are taught. Make sure that the right safety gears have been provided or are already present while going for such expeditions. It is important to have the security measures updated and familiarized with. Make sure that the ratio of the instructor to that of the students learning is minimal. This is useful in many ways. It essential that the instructor has enough time to keep a regular check on the student and also enough time to reach in case of any uncertainty. Make sure that the instructor is registered with certified organizations like the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI). Self rescue training is supposed to be conducted before the actual field expedition. The Rock and Ice is one such organization that undertakes courses for all categories and all the instructors are full time members of the AMI.
